About Emergency Care

What is the Emergency Care program?

Created in partnership with the American Safety & Health Institute and Human Kinetics, Complete Emergency Care is a unique blend of online self-study and instructor-led training that provides a practical yet comprehensive means of obtaining certification in CPR, AED, first aid, bloodborne pathogens, and emergency oxygen. It is the first and only emergency care training course developed specifically for physical activity professionals. The course is scenario based and asks students to put themselves in the role of the rescuer. Interactive activities based on the latest treatment guidelines are present throughout the course, including a virtual CPR activity. The course is complemented by the Complete Emergency Care text and is also available with the Family and Friends CPR Anytime Kit, which includes a small CPR manikin so that participants can practice the scenarios in the course.

Once participants have passed the online component, they take part in a fast-paced, engaging instructor-led session. During this session they practice the skills and knowledge gained in the online course and then complete written and practical exams to receive certification from the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI).

Why choose the Emergency Care program?

  • Interactive, self-paced learning. An online course takes the place of the traditional classroom course allowing students to work at their own pace and review the material as often as necessary. The course uses realistic scenarios relevant to physical activity professionals to help participants learn lifesaving training within their work context.
  • Save staff time. Because students study at home rather than in the classroom your staff will spend less time training and have more time for their regular duties. The instructor-led session and certification testing take just one day.
  • Consistent delivery of high quality instruction. Because this course is delivered online, participants receive the same level of instruction regardless of when or where they choose to study.
  • Flexible training options. For those who do not need to prepare for all the certifications offered by Complete Emergency Care, the course can be broken into smaller modules that offer preparation for either CPR and AED (at the professional or community level) or first aid certification.
  • Dedicated customer support staff. Our staff will be on hand to help ease you through the implementation process.

How do I get started?

Become a Training Center or find a Training Center near you.

The Emergency Care program lets you to take control of your own staff training rather than depending on outside agencies. By becoming a Training Center, you can easily train and certify your own staff whenever needed and even create a new revenue stream by offering certification to members of the community.

Becoming a Training Center is easy!

1. Complete a Training Center application.
2. Choose your instructors and complete a new instructor application for each of them.
3. Have each instructor complete the online instructor course.

  • Instructors who are not already certified instructors with another agency must also attend an instructor-led training session in order to finish the certification process.
  • Those who are already certified instructors with American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Ellis & Associates, or National Safety Council qualify for reciprocity and do not need to attend the instructor-led session.
4. Purchase online courses for your staff and begin training!
