About the Course
The Complete Emergency Care blended course offered by Human Kinetics is the first and only emergency care training course developed specifically for physical activity professionals and volunteers. The course tailors the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) curriculums to those working in physical activity fields. Complete Emergency Care combines a unique blend of online self-study followed by instructor-led training and competency assessment that provides a practical yet comprehensive means of obtaining certification in CPR, AED, first aid, bloodborne pathogens, and emergency oxygen. For people who do not need to prepare for all the certifications offered by Complete Emergency Care, the course can be broken into smaller modules that offer only preparation for either CPR (at the professional or community level) or first aid certification.
Participants in Complete Emergency Care begin their two-step training process with the online course, Complete Emergency Care Part A. Its interactive, scenario-based format uses situations relevant to coaches, physical educators, fitness instructors, and other physical activity professionals to help participants learn lifesaving training within their work context and be prepared to take action using the proper protocol when sudden illness or injury occurs.
After completing the online course, participants attend Complete Emergency Care Part B, a fast-paced and engaging instructor-led session. During this session, participants work through a series of scenarios to practice the skills and knowledge gained in the online course and complete a written test and practical exam to receive certification through the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI).
For organizations with certification requirements in employee emergency care, Complete Emergency Care’s in-house training option offers the best in flexibility, cost savings, and income potential. With minimal investment, staff members can complete an ASHI certification process to become instructors, enabling their organization to become a Human Kinetics (HK) Emergency Care Training Center. As an HK Training Center, an organization can provide in-house CPR and AED certification when needed, without relying on outside certification agencies. Plus, organizations have the potential to generate additional income by offering Complete Emergency Care courses and ASHI certification to their patrons. With Complete Emergency Care, agencies, organizations, schools, YMCAs, fitness centers, and others can manage training costs, increase flexibility in scheduling, and contribute to the health and safety of their staff, patrons, and community.
Complete Emergency Care is the only course to include in one package all aspects of CPR, AED, and first aid training relevant to the physical activity field. While other agencies offer limited combination classes, Complete Emergency Care offers a complete training package delivered with the advantages of a blended learning approach. Complete Emergency Care’s unique learning approach is complemented by its individualized certification options. The best choice for people in remote locations, Complete Emergency Care saves travel time and cost with self-paced, at-home learning and a concentrated practicum and certification at the training center.
The course textbook, Complete Emergency Care, is included with the course. And, by purchasing the optional Family and Friends CPR Anytime Kit, participants can get their own portable CPR manikin so they can practice CPR while role-playing the numerous interactive scenarios and the virtual CPR activity included in the online course. When training time in the course is completed, participants are encouraged to pass on the manikin kit to family and friends who don’t need certification for work requirements but do need to know the lifesaving skill of CPR. The kit contains an instructional DVD along with the manikin so that family and friends will be prepared to respond when an emergency happens at home.
Complete Emergency Care is organized into four segments:
- Bloodborne Pathogens presents precautionary steps to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens; discusses the mode of transmission, symptoms, and methods of treatment for many bloodborne pathogens; describes how to clean up and dispose of contaminated materials; and details what to do if exposure to potentially infectious material occurs.
- Basic First Aid outlines the four steps to an emergency response; presents the proper response to emergency situations and demonstrates basic first aid care for a variety of common injuries; and discusses how to identify and treat various first aid emergencies, such as limb, spine, and head injuries, soft-tissue injuries, heat- and cold-related injuries, sudden illness, bleeding, and shock.
- CPR and AED for the Community and Workplace offers training in basic life support (BLS), including rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) based on the 2005 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. It also presents key psychological and legal aspects of providing basic life support and demonstrates the proper emergency action steps for adults, children, and infants, including how to alter emergency action steps to accommodate special conditions and how to assist adults, children, and infants who are choking. This level of training is designed for those who would likely be the only person to respond during an emergency and have limited or no equipment available.
- Emergency Oxygen outlines the benefits of using emergency oxygen and details when and how to administer emergency oxygen, including how to assemble, maintain, and safely handle the devices used to deliver emergency oxygen and how to incorporate them into rescue breathing and CPR efforts.
Both the online course and instructor-led session present the content through realistic examples involving coaches, physical educators, and others in the physical activity field. Participants role-play these scenarios as a first responder, practicing the evidence-based protocols and treatment recommendations from the latest international guidelines for CPR, AED, and first aid.
Complete Emergency Care is the only program available to meet the cost, flexibility, and scheduling needs of organizations and the travel and time constraints of individuals. Its unique blended learning approach with experiential, hands-on activities will revolutionize emergency care training by combining flexibility and convenience with an effective and engaging opportunity to learn lifesaving health and safety skills.
