About the Course
The CPR-Pro for the Professional Rescuer blended course offered through Human Kinetics tailors the American Safety and Health Institute CPR-Pro curriculum to the physical activity professional and volunteer audience. The course combines a unique blend of online self-study followed by instructor-led training and competency assessment that provides a practical means of obtaining certification in CPR and AED.
Participants begin their two-step training process with the online course. Its interactive, scenario-based format uses situations relevant to coaches, physical educators, fitness instructors, and other physical activity professionals to help participants learn lifesaving training within their work context and be prepared to take action using the proper protocol when sudden illness or injury occurs.
After completing the online course, participants attend a fast-paced and engaging instructor-led session. During this session, participants work through a series of scenarios to practice the skills and knowledge gained in the online course and complete a written test and practical exam to receive certification through the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI).
CPR-Pro for the Professional Rescuer offers training in basic life support (BLS), including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) based on the 2005 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. It also presents key psychological and legal aspects of providing basic life support; demonstrates how to check for a pulse and provide rescue breathing when a person does not need CPR; shows how to perform CPR and provide care as part of a two-person emergency response team; discusses how to alter emergency action steps to accommodate special conditions; and shows how to assist adults, children, and infants who are choking. This level of training is designed for those who would likely respond as part of a team effort supported by basic equipment. Professionals in the physical activity field who may want to consider the professional rescuer level of training include lifeguards, coaches, athletic trainers, fitness instructors, physical education teachers, recreation leaders, and others who work in public settings.
